Southern Cape Golf Union
Southern Cape Golf Union (SCGU), is the regional golf union for the Garden Route and southern parts of the Karoo. It sits alongside Western Province Golf and Boland Golf Union as one of the GolfRSA-recognised unions connected to the Western Cape.

What is Southern Cape Golf Union?
SCGU is the golf body for affiliated clubs across the Garden Route and southern Karoo. The union represents 27 affiliated clubs, 28 golf courses and about 8,200 registered golfers, with its office based at George Golf Club.
Its role covers the organised amateur golf structure in the region. This includes union events, junior opens, league golf, Order of Merit rankings, team selection criteria, results, conduct rules and communication with clubs.
Where does SCGU fit in the Western Cape golf?
GolfRSA is the national amateur golf structure in South Africa. Under GolfRSA, junior golf is organised through regional and provincial unions.
In the Western Cape golf landscape, the three main unions are Western Province Golf, Boland Golf Union and Southern Cape Golf Union.
SCGU has its own junior events, rankings, selection criteria and representative structures.
A child based in Cape Town will usually come across WP Golf first. A child playing around Paarl, Stellenbosch, Worcester, Hermanus or Langebaan may deal more with Boland Golf. A child playing in the Garden Route or southern Karoo will usually come into the SCGU structure.
Players can enter certain open events outside their home union when the entry rules allow it. Field limits, eligibility and exemption categories can differ from event to event.
What SCGU offers young golfers
SCGU gives young players a structured route into competitive golf. The main pieces are junior opens, handicap divisions, age-group rankings, selection criteria, conduct rules and representative opportunities.
The structure is quite practical. SCGU junior events are for amateurs who are under 19 at the start of the tournament. Players must be members of a GolfRSA-affiliated club and need a handicap index, or another accepted handicap system.
SCGU junior golf is not a beginner clinic. It is quite serious tournament golf. Your child needs to be able to enter correctly, keep score, follow the rules, handle pace of play and finish the round without help.
Southern Cape junior tournaments
SCGU junior events are divided by handicap, which helps place players at a suitable level.
- A Division is for players with a handicap index up to 6.5,
- B Division is for 6.6 to 15.3,
- C Division is for 15.4 and higher.
A and B divisions play medal golf, while C Division plays individual Stableford.
That split makes sense. Stronger players are tested in medal golf, while developing players can still gain proper tournament experience without one bad hole completely ruining the day.
SCGU Junior Opens are one-day, 18-hole tournament events. They are part of the regional junior golf structure and can feed into Order of Merit rankings and selection decisions.
Caddies, spectators and independence
SCGU junior golf is strict about on-course help.
No caddies are permitted for SCGU Junior Events. Parents and spectators must stay at least 30 metres away from players, and no parent or spectator may use a golf cart during the event.
There is one important exception: children 9 years and younger who play in C Division may, by arrangement, have a parent assist with carrying the golf bag and scoring only. That is practical help, not full caddying, so it does not include advice, shot decisions or rulings.
Children who want to be considered for provincial teams cannot be assisted by a parent.
Southern Cape junior rankings
SCGU keeps junior Order of Merit rankings across age groups including U11, U13, U15, U17 and U19.
These rankings track results from recognised SCGU events and form part of the selection process for Southern Cape junior teams.
For the main competitive age groups, SCGU uses a Dynamic / Performance ranking system that measures a player’s round against the field and calculates a stroke differential.
The Order of Merit uses counting tournaments and a player’s best differentials.
Selection and representative golf
SCGU rankings connect to Southern Cape team selection.
Selection can include automatic places based on Order of Merit position, with remaining places available through selectors’ picks or wild-card options. Recent tournament scores, counting events, eligibility and player conduct can all be part of the selection picture.

Affiliated Southern Cape golf clubs

When is your child ready for Southern Cape Golf events?
There is no perfect age to start golf. Some children are ready for junior tournaments quite early, while others need more time through lessons, club golf, school golf or beginner-friendly events.
Your child does not need to be a low-handicap player to enter SCGU junior golf. C Division gives higher-handicap players a Stableford format, which is a more suitable starting point than medal golf.
However, they do need to be ready for tournament conditions.
Before entering, check whether your child can:
- play 18 holes individually;
- keep score correctly;
- keep up with the group;
- understand rules such as lost balls, penalty areas and out of bounds;
- register on time;
- play without coaching;
- handle medal or Stableford scoring, depending on the division.
A and B Division players need to be ready for medal scoring. C Division players still need to complete the round properly, follow the rules and manage themselves on the course.
