Junior golf teaches children plenty, but parents learn a lot along the way as well. You learn when to help, when to step back, when to ask questions, and when to simply let your child figure things out on the course.
Some days will feel organised and smooth. Other days will involve forgotten gloves, bad weather, missed putts, tears, rushed tee times or a quiet car ride home. That is all part of it.
The aim of this guide is not to turn every parent into a golf expert. It is to help you feel more prepared, make better decisions, and support your child in a way that keeps golf healthy, enjoyable and worth coming back to.
Common terms you’ll hear on the course
Golf has its own language. These are some of the words that will often come up in your kid’s golf journey.
Handicap
A number that reflects a golfer’s playing ability.
HNA
The system used in South Africa to manage official handicaps and scores.
Order of Merit
A ranking system based on results in selected events.
Gross score
The actual number of shots taken before handicap is applied.
Nett score
A score after handicap is applied.
Stroke play
Every shot counts, and the total score matters.
Stableford
A points-based scoring format where players earn points on each hole.
Match play
Players compete hole by hole instead of only by total score.
