Kids’ Golf Shirts in South Africa: Brands, Prices & Where to Buy

A plain polo or something a little more colourful? When it comes to kids’ golf shirts, there’s plenty to choose from.

Adidas, Nike, Puma and Under Armour all have junior options, ranging from classic golf polos to lightweight performance shirts. And if your child prefers something with a bit more personality, South African brands are worth a look too.

Custom Apparel makes some seriously funky junior golf shirts, with bright prints and proper children’s sizes. BooYaa Golf has some great designs too, although its smaller adult sizes are more likely to suit older juniors.

Prices vary quite a bit. A basic polo from Mr Price might be all your child needs, while a dedicated performance shirt or a funky local design can cost considerably more.

The good news? There’s no need to spend a fortune to find a golf shirt your child enjoys wearing.

Does your child need a proper golf shirt?

Not necessarily.

For lessons, driving range sessions and casual rounds, a regular collared polo is usually fine, provided it meets the club’s dress code.

We started with ordinary polos from Mr Price, and they worked perfectly well.

Once your child starts playing longer rounds, you may find that a performance golf shirt is worth the extra money.

What you’re paying extra for

Regular golfers are often made from cotton or cotton blends. They’re comfortable, but they can become damp and heavy when your child starts sweating.

Performance kids golf shirts usually use lightweight, quick-drying fabrics that help manage sweat and allow plenty of movement during the swing.

That can make a noticeable difference during a hot summer round in the Western Cape.

Other performance golf shirts offer more than that. Depending on the brand and design, you may also get:

  • UV protection: Some shirts have a rated UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor), which helps reduce UV exposure through the covered fabric. Under Armour, for example, offers selected junior polos with UPF 50+.
  • Moisture-wicking fabric: Helps move sweat away from the skin so it can evaporate.
  • Four-way stretch: Gives your child more freedom to move during their swing.
  • Breathable materials: Can make a long, hot round more comfortable.

Not every expensive golf shirt includes these features, so it’s worth checking the product description rather than assuming they’re included.

For us, UV protection is a particularly useful feature to look for. Our children spend so much time outdoors, and a shirt that combines comfort with additional sun protection is worth considering.

Just remember that even a UPF-rated shirt only protects the skin it covers. Sunscreen, a cap and other sun protection are still important.

Where to buy kids’ golf shirts in South Africa

There are several places to look, depending on your child’s age, your budget and whether you’re shopping for a basic polo or a specialist golf shirt.

Budget-friendly option

Affordable kids golf shirts

General clothing retailers are a good starting point, particularly for younger children and beginners.

Mr Price and Woolworths often have collared polos in their children’s clothing ranges. Schoolwear shops are another option.

Check the fit and length. Some casual polos are quite short, which isn’t ideal if your child needs to tuck their shirt in for a competition.

Best for:
Beginners, occasional golfers and families looking for affordable basics.

Abacus

Abacus is another brand worth looking at if you want a proper junior golf shirt without spending too much.

Boys’ and girls’ golf shirts: Is there a difference?

Mostly in the fit and design.

Boys’ golf shirts tend to have a straighter cut, while girls’ styles may be more fitted or slightly shorter.

But there’s no reason a girl can’t wear a boys’ or unisex golf shirt if she prefers the design.

The same goes for colours and patterns. Don’t limit your search to the section a retailer thinks your child should be shopping in.

Custom Apparel, for example, offers unisex junior designs.

Our advice: Look at the measurements rather than relying on the boys’ or girls’ label..

Choosing the right size kids golf shirt

Children’s clothing sizes can be frustratingly inconsistent.

A shirt labelled age 10 might fit perfectly in one brand and be too small in another.

When shopping online, we’d check five things:

  • Shoulders: Your child should be able to rotate freely during a swing.
  • Sleeves: They shouldn’t feel tight around the upper arms.
  • Length: The shirt should be long enough to tuck in if necessary.
  • Body: A relaxed fit is fine, but too much loose fabric can get in the way.
  • Size chart: Use your child’s measurements rather than relying only on age.

If you’re between sizes, a little growing room is useful. But don’t go several sizes bigger just to make the shirt last another year.

What about adult XXS or XS golf shirts for kids?

For older kids, smaller adult sizes can open up more choices.

Just remember that adult clothing is cut differently from children’s clothing. The shoulders may be wider, the sleeves longer and the shirt itself much too long.

If possible, have your child try it on before buying.

Where can you find junior golf shirts on sale?

We always check the sale sections before paying full price for golf clothing.

Children grow quickly, and golf shirts can still be in excellent condition when they no longer fit.

Bargain hunting

A few places worth checking before paying full price for a junior golf shirt.

Check the brand websites

Adidas, Puma, Nike and Under Armour all have South African online stores.

Their sale sections are worth checking, particularly when new collections arrive.

Quick tip: Check the available sizes before getting too excited about a discount. Junior sizes can sell out quickly.

Have a look in golf pro shops

Some golf club pro shops stock junior clothing, although the selection varies.

You might come across older collections or discounted shirts that are no longer available online.

Quick tip: Have a look when you’re visiting a club. You never know what’s hiding on the sale rail.

Try factory shops & outlets

Factory shops and sportswear outlets can be good places to find older Adidas, Nike, Puma or Under Armour styles at reduced prices.

Dedicated junior golf clothing isn’t always stocked, but you may find a suitable performance polo in the children’s section.

Quick tip: Don’t worry too much about finding the latest collection. A good shirt from last season still does the job.

Don’t forget secondhand

Kids golf shirts are great items to buy secondhand. Children often outgrow them long before they’re worn out.

Check the collar, stitching, fabric and printed designs before buying.

You can also look for junior golf clothing in our Secondhand Junior Golf Gear Facebook group.

One last tip: If your child isn’t particular about a brand or colour, you’ll usually have more options when shopping for discounted kids golf shirts.

What we’ve learned from buying junior golf shirts for our son

When our son first started playing golf, we bought his golfers at Mr Price. As he began playing more regularly, we gradually added proper kids golf shirts to his wardrobe.

We still buy affordable polos, though. If a shirt fits well, is comfortable and meets the dress code, it doesn’t need a golf brand on the front.

The biggest difference we’ve noticed as he’s started spending more hours on the course is how much the fabric and fit matter. A shirt that’s comfortable for a short lesson isn’t always the best choice for a full round.

And we love that South African brands are offering something different from the usual golf shirts, with colourful patterns and funky designs.

These days, we look for shirts that fit properly, feel good throughout a round and suit how often he plays. The colours and patterns? That’s where he gets to have some fun!

FAQ’s about kids golf shirts

Yes. A regular collared polo is usually fine for lessons and casual rounds, provided it meets the club’s dress code.

For hot weather and longer rounds, performance fabrics can be more comfortable because they usually dry faster. Cotton is still suitable for many casual sessions.

Custom Apparel offers colourful golf shirts in dedicated junior sizes. BooYaa Golf also has bold designs, although its smaller adult sizes are more likely to fit older juniors.

Of course. Choose whichever shirt fits comfortably and suits her preferences.

For one lesson or round a week, one or two shirts may be enough. If your child practises regularly and competes on weekends, having three or four can make laundry easier.

Sometimes. A good performance shirt can be more comfortable for long rounds, particularly in hot weather. But an expensive brand isn’t automatically better than a well-fitting, affordable alternative.
